You often get screwdriver bits in the small 1/4" drive ratchet sets. So it might be that it was done up with one of those. The normal power tool screwdriver bits have something like a 6mm or so hex on them so it is possibly to improvise sometimes by just shoving one of them in a suitably sized hex socket.

Glad to hear its back in one piece and seemingly OK though. :)
