Barrett's South Coast Spottage

Postby Barrett » Mon May 14, 2012 2:09 am

In place of any actual new content, here's some very old content. A sort of 'best of' my last few years worth of spottings.

Starting back in 2009, after hanging out on a certain Brown Forum for a while I realised that other people might be interested in some of the old tat that I walked past on a regular basis, so for the first time ever I stuck my camera in my pocket and went for a stroll with the sole intent of photographing old motors. That initial trip gave me some finds that I probably haven't outdone to this day. And also a brown Montego.

The Skoda is probably still my all-time favourite find

Happily, apart from the Montego, which has vanished from the DVLA database, the others are all still taxed and on the road.

Still in 2009, this Viva was a fixture on this street for years, covered in little giffer touches, but it's no longer around anymore. Luckily it's still (just) taxed so presumably it lives on in another part of the country

I'm not sure how this cooking oil collection business works, somebody drives this old heap around all day collection oil, then filters it and pours it back into the fuel tank of the truck, so it can carry on driving about collecting more oil

Tatty Fiesta Ghia was a great survivor but was recently spotted on ebay as an 'unfinished' resto project, stripped and unloved.

Into 2010 now with this impeccably clean early facelift 240. Still hanging about down here and looking just as nice.

Well, in 2011 I left this stinking hole behind and headed off to the land of opportunity, Americaland. Naturally I spent about 85% of my time walking around looking for cars to take photos of, which wasn't exactly hard seeing as the streets of San Francisco are lined with wall-to-wall tat. Here are a few highlights.

Back on home turf again, and after being exposed to such high levels of Scat for so long, it was a little disappointing coming back to such seemingly meagre offerings over here. Fortunately the quality, if not quantity, was high

Around this time I started making a more concerted effort to go out and find stuff, mainly inspired by Brammy's incredible finds, I realised that they weren't going to come to me so I'd have to go to them - Acquiring a barely usable bike along the way helped get to some previously unexplored areas around Brighton.

A trip to Eastbourne with G.Cox last September netted these

Back in Brighton, I'm constantly surprised by what is lurking in the relatively central bits of town. This Samara was untaxed when I spotted it but it's still parked up in the same place as of two weeks ago

This beige Kadett is now owned by a lad on RR who has swapped the engine over for something much bigger and 'stanced' it to within an inch of its life. Turns out I managed to capture the actual transaction taking place, as that's him sat in the passenger seat

Into 2012 with a bang (well, nearly), this lovely old GSA was spotted on an early-morning bike ride on Christmas day

whilst a stroll around London with Seth netted this pair

All that brings us more or less where I left off on the old forum, so here are the last few weeks worth of rubbish old motors

Portslade again, and yet more epically rusty metal
Image
c.1960s Morris Minor by barrogance, on Flickr

pink Mini with expensive reg
Image

And yet more iron oxide

This ancient Saab was laid up in Seaford, seems a real shame to me that it's just sitting here rotting as it looked quite solid really. It's been here since 2006 apparently
Image
1966 Saab 96 V4 by barrogance, on Flickr

Confusingly badged Italian rust magnet
Image
1983 Magirus Deutz by barrogance, on Flickr

And here are a few from today, and a very wet wander around. This Transit looked great and had a few period-style add-ons, including a wood-rim steering wheel. Class!
Image
1971 Ford Transit Custom by barrogance, on Flickr

Ratty Viva right in the middle of Brighton
Image
1972 Vauxhall Viva 1300 GLS by barrogance, on Flickr

which was carrying some excellent period stickerage
Image

A local Mazda with original Hove dealer plates and sticker. Those trims don't look too 'Executive' to me
Image
1989 Mazda 323 Executive saloon by barrogance, on Flickr

This was MEGA. Really tatty old beast with bent bumpers, scabby paint and rust creeping through all over the place.
Image
1971 Jensen Interceptor by barrogance, on Flickr

Image
1977 Opel Manta coupe by barrogance, on Flickr

As has already been pointed out on Flickr, this scruffy Toldeo would look miles better* with a rattlecan paint job and some inappropriate wheels
Image

Best BX trims:

And finally, a very dead Merc
Image

Right, that's everything up to date. Normal service will resume next time....

Right, time for a little update.
This is the first really early Dyane I've ever seen I think. I'm not even sure if we got these ones with the solid c-pillar over here new?
Image

Especially for IKB
Image
1990 Rover Metro Clubman L by barrogance, on Flickr

RHD UK-market 500 is quite a rare sight outside of London these days. Nice to see one that hasn't been over-restored or turned into a half-assed Abarth rep
Image
1972 Fiat 500 by barrogance, on Flickr

1964*
Image
1964 Land-Rover by barrogance, on Flickr

This is mega cool. Looked like it's been really carefully looked after in the past, either very original or sympathetically restored, down to the dealer plates and alarm stickers in the windows. Let's see how it fares parked outside on a busy coast road...
Image
1987 Vauxhall Cavalier 1.8 Cabriolet by barrogance, on Flickr

I should probably have poked my head into this garage, it's not outside a house or anything. Probably just full of broken perambulators, lawn mowers, kids' BMXs and off-cuts of MDF like every other boring garage in the world
Image
1985 Ford Capri Laser by barrogance, on Flickr

A golden sky as the sun sets over Brighton station, and yet another crappy old Amazon. Nice number plate for less than fastidious James Bond fans
Image
1970 Volvo Amazon by barrogance, on Flickr

I used to walk passed this thing on my way to school, I think it was a daily driver back then but it's been laid up for a few years now. Looks pretty solid though and no doubt worth something to the right person
Image
1988 Ford Escort XR3i by barrogance, on Flickr

Camo paint best for blending in to city streets
Image
1986 Bedford CF by barrogance, on Flickr

Tidy Orion was parked outside a very posh house on a very posh road, which is always nice to see. Hopefully it wasn't just their gardener's car or whatever
Image
1990 Ford Orion 1.4 GL by barrogance, on Flickr

This pair have been untaxed since 2007, but still look miraculously solid for all that time left sitting. I think the owner was a real enthusiast who has had to give up driving, as they looked like they were really well-loved before being laid up.

Neglected Midget made my photo criteria even though I totally ignored a nice tidy blue example I saw about an hour later
Image

This pair were parked nose-to-nose in a crowded street of terraced houses. Herald looks absolutely knackered, and the K-G isn't far behind
Image
1964 Triumph Herald 1200 by barrogance, on Flickr

Image
1967 VW Karman-Ghia by barrogance, on Flickr

Managed to find this again, so got a slightly better picture. It's mega rough, I love it (and I really don't like Interceptors normally)

Image
1970 Land Rover by barrogance, on Flickr

Trendy roofrack...
Image
1989 Dodge / Renault 50 by barrogance, on Flickr

This thing looked BRAND SPANKING NEW, I couldn't believe it. No sign of the typical paint-fade, or in fact that it has ever been used at all
Image
1987 Renault Espace by barrogance, on Flickr

And finally, what is this thing? A petrol pump?
