McTrebus

On Sunday Len and I celebrated Len's new-found bipedalism by visiting a place that appeared on Brown recently. I'd say it has been a croft/smallholding at one time but instead of filling the field with goats and chickens, like a normal crofter, or incongruous antique farming implements and horrid Ikea crap, like the "escape to the country" types that populate most of the countryside, this chap has chosen to fill his field with old cars.

Image
Len took this picture. The owner seems to have a soft spot for VWs and there are quite a few Minis but other than that there is virtually nothing that has ever been desirable. I'm told there's a Mk1 Escort in there somewhere but if there is it's the only OSF, not even a Corsair or aircraft carrier.

I don't think I've ever seen a Fiat 1100 before but I saw two on Sunday.

There was a corner full of this sort of thing. I'm pretty sure this had a Rover badge on the boot.

This is a Lanchester of some kind

There were quite a few Talbot Sambas in there. There was plenty from the French side of the Talbot family tree but I don't remember seeing anything from the Rootes side.

Peugeot 604, probably beyond saving. The VW beside it is also beyond saving but I bet somebody would do it anyway

Reasonably intact Type 2. There is a split screen version there too, which somebody has added in the comments for that picture.

Cars that sit on their belly as soon as you stop the engine best for parking in muddy fields.

I didn't notice at the time but I'm pretty sure this is an early Clubman.

I think these look quite smart

I'll finish with a Volvosaurus for now and let Len post some of his pictures.

I didn't see the 'good' Renault 6. They're such dowdy looking things I think I almost ignored them completely.
This place is incredible, a proper 'scat dreamland' (there's one for you, Google bots).

I've started a policy of not repeating the same content twice, so I've got a set of different photos on facebook, flickr and another on imgur. Messy!

At first, we stood around in amazement for a few minutes. I didn't know where to start!

Image

A Visa GTi, slightly scruffier than Jon's one.

Insert stock joke about Italian cars.

Image

Maxi spoils view of R4 spoiling the view of a Ssangyong Musso. Gives you an idea of the automotive diversity here.

Image

Lovely early Ladas.

Image

I can't remember the last time I saw a series 1 305, and I've never seen one in that burnt orange colour reminiscent of my mum's old Chevette.

Image

Proper Škoda

I took loads of photos but I don't want to 'photo bomb' the internet with pics of this place. Also resizing the photos on Linux makes them a bit fuzzy (any ideas Ozzy?)

That is a pretty special place. This shot makes it look really colourful there even on an unusually* dull day.

Not Always Auto

Rootes built Cortinas under licence and just changed the badging.

My spidey-senses picked up that Visa GTi from a small sample in one of the 'original' sets of photos. Do you think there's be any chance of acquiring some of the GTi unique bits, like headlight surrounds, body kit, steering wheel, gearknob etc? Would be very much interested if so. Have an idea about visiting the UK in August so could fill up my luggage with festering French plastic things.

Apart from the condition, I think the content of this collection matches anything on offer over here; or perhaps I've not seen enough elderly Euro porridge of late.

As far as I know everything is for sale but the owner is a bit odd, so completing any transaction is a bit of a challenge. Suhinaffy on Brown has been in contact with the owner so he might be able to pass on contact details. I would be happy to remove/store the bits for you once some kind of arrangement has been made.

I swear I replied to this thread yesterday :?

Yea, so it looks like a lot of this detritus has been sitting there for some time. Sort of makes you think if the owner had done something about it he could have actually made a bit of money. Even in weigh-in money he's got to be in for a good couple of grand plus the land value. Oh well, nowt queer as folk.

I've just noticed the pale metallic green late Princess - probably an '81 - has the cream velour interior I actually want. I imagine it's an HLS interior and is probably decidedly soggy. I wonder what steering wheel it has? There's not much else of use on it by the looks of things, sadly, certainly not anything that's better than mine currently has but needs replacing. I see a BX and a Saab 96 estate hiding in the shots too, really diverse stuff and much the same as I'd end up collecting myself had I got the correct ratio of time, money and space.

Thanks for the info Richard, I'll contact Suhinaffy on the brown and ask his advice. Your offer of removal/storage is much appreciated too! I've got family just outside Arbroath but have no idea if that's anywhere near you or the sacred scat but I'd be sure to make a trip up if we do visit the UK this August.
