Right! after a few days skiving* I got back on with this horror lovely vehicle today.

For all lovers of suspense, these are the remains of the snapped bolts. (except the one I dropped and couldn't find). Sorry about the photo quality, but I forgot the camera and had to make do with an android tablet thing instead.

So, how did the bolts come out? Molegrips? No... Easy out? No... Harold, the mild mannered Janitor? Eh, no.

Much like the lady/baby/huge head analogy earlier, I had to make a small* incision.

Leaving a minute and barely noticable scar on the undercarriage.

I still need a track rod end, but other than that, it's back together. I'll consult the failure list again tomorrow and decide what to fix next.

Even by BMC standards, this one is taking the piss a bit. I haven't tried to access the engine at all yet, that's bound to be fun!

I also noticed that the bodyshell is galvanized (while I was cutting holes in it and attacking it with hot things.... on those bits the zinc is gone) but the subframes, suspension arms etc are not. It's Ginetta cost cutting all over again!

Apart from the wheel arches, presumably!

On the home straight now.. Last few fails were for dim headlights, foglamp inop and emissions. The headlights seem bright, but the beam pattern is rubbish. Now I know how to open the bonnet (boot?) I had a look this afternoon to see if the bulbs were correctly seated.

Image

They weren't because there is a wire attached with a scotchlok that pushed the bulb to one side when the cover is on. Also, wtf is this wire, and why is it there?

A closer look shows that the feed to the driver's headlamp is cut, and the bulb is supplied via the "extra" red wire. Obviously something funny about the feed to the headlights - they are separately fused so I looked in the fusebox.

The two red 10A on the bottom row towards the right hand end are the headlight dip beam fuses - both have power but I noticed while probing them that if you waggle the left hand one, the lights go out. Also, the one just to their left powers the foglamp and if you waggle that, the foglamps start to work....

So on monday sometime, I'm going to sort out the iffy fusebox, solder the driver's headlight feed back together and remove the red wire. That just leaves the emissions to deal with. EASY!

Tested!

Emissions problem was mostly a blocked air filter. It's still a filthy mare, but just squeezes in below the legal maximum for CO emissions. Probably the cat is on it's way out - lambda and HC are both fine.

Other than that (and the oil switches I got this morning are the wrong ones) all is well.

All ready for collection with a whole day spare! Wooohooo!
