Classics on the Common

Postby Seth » Thu Aug 01, 2013 6:46 pm

The best laid plans mostly worked out for yesterday's Classics on the Common at Harpenden. PaulH came up to my place on the tube, we ate some lunch, filled the car with toys and food, picked up Ickle_Seth from her day-camp and headed up the motorway. Traffic getting in to Harpenden wasn't too bad and we were soon parked, by the Hog Roast stall, natch. Amazingly Barrett and Gary Cox had already arrived in the Red Herald of Doom so we soon found them lurking near a VW camper and all the Ferraris.

This Mini looked proper.

Made in Chichester. Well, manufactured there. Probably badly assembled in some blokes garage.

Image

This Vanguard followed in behind the custom Woodie and the Pick up that I photographed last year.

Image

Black Monza was very black and very straight too.

Image

It was only recently I became aware how bizarre this headlight arrangement actually is.

Image

'Will never be a classic' There was also a K plate Rover 400 somewhere.

Image

Mega want. I know a joke about these.

Image

I took many photos of this. It is truly wonderful. The underneath/running gear is absolutely minty - as is proper for this kind of thing. No doubt some thick people think its a lash up/waste/stupid etc.

Image

Smart.

Image

Mean.

Image

If only there was someone who like these BMWs?

Image

I loved this detail on a nice Bentley coupe.

Image

Another star attraction was a pair of Lotus 11s.

After a fair amount of sitting around/in the Hillman the Brightonians eventually decided it was best to head off home as it would take a few hours.

Image

WIth them gone we wandered round other bits we hadn't yet seen.

Image

Image

Wait, I thought they'd gone? Oh it took a while to get out of the field, what with having to mow down numerous children and pets on the way through. This photo is intentionally blurry as proof to this car being in motion under its own power.

Image

Image

I'm sure this Sierra is the one that lives round the corner. I'll have to go and have a look tomorrow.

Image

I know a joke about this.

Image

Now here was a surprise. Me looking at a bike for one! But what's this?

Image

Wow!

Image

In summary: Space Age.

Image

This is the insides of the C&SC staffer's Citroen.

Image

Wat's Angry Funeral Services.

Image

Hmm, I was dubious as to the 'fast' as this lever...

Yeah, so as we headed back to the car I got the inevitable text message telling me that the red Herald was parked on the hard shoulder of the M25. Ho hum.

This was a good day (except the end bit). That Escort estate was great, looked really 'used' and original. The Cordia was one of my favourite things there though, I don't think I've ever seen one before.

I don't think the Sierra parcel shelf was the best medium for advertising a solicitor.

Think it is a Mulliner body - that door handle seems to be a trademark of theirs on R-Rs & Bentleys of this era.
