Once upon a summer of old tat

Postby Mr_Lobster » Fri Aug 23, 2013 7:53 pm

Once Upon A Time, back in the olden days I had a login for this place. Then I lost it and I think the URL (or at least my bookmark) changed and all seemed lost. So we'll start again shall we with a recap of my summer adventures so far.

I suppose I am lucky* that work takes me to a lot of car shows and I see a lot of interesting* old stuff. Some of you may have already feasted your eyes on the facebook page but for those who haven't had the pleasure, heres a recap of the year so far.

We started with the Stamford Hall VW Show, lots of shiny VWs as you'd imagine together with predictable scened up silliness but this was my favourite -

Utterly standard, base model and incredibly clean. I'm impressed that someone had lavished such care on something so ordinary.

Jetta was at the same venue and was also a bit good

Few weeks later we did Bristol Volksfest. Same shiny VWs but down in t'southwest. This was something you don't see so much of though

VW shows are all well and good but do get a bit samey so we threw ourselves at a few classic shows as well. The following were at Bodelwyddan Castle in that Wales -

So anyway, a week after the nice classic car show at the nice castle in Wales I was back down South for a show I had reservations about when I booked it. But how bad could French Car Show at Castle Combe be?

Some interesting tat -

Curiously, this (below) had had the standard 1.4 lump yoinked out and replaced with a 950cc unit instead. I have absolutely no idea why you would do that.

Nice R5 Le Car2 Turbo pretty much completes the line up of old, interesting stuff.

Otherwise it was all modified Clios and stuff like this which does not a happy (or rich) Lobster make

To round off my weekend, as I was packing up it rained in biblical amounts. The only way to cheer myself up was with the usual Tesco Scotch Egg and whatever-sandwich-doesn't-look-too-bad combo which was duly achieved at Tesco in Thornbury. This carpark spot also brightened an otherwise hopeless weekend

A few weeks later, with a few more VW shows under our belt it was down to Shugborough Hall near Cannock or somesuch for another general classic show. This was much more like it for tat spotting...

Sid 'n Doris were just coming back to the Renner as I snapped it and seemed very pleased with it and in all fairness it was pretty nice in a bland kind of way. Still would (the car, not Doris)

XR3i was nice but must have taken the owners ages to surround it with a ton of shit. The iside was equally bad with special shelves laid out to hold models, brochures, cuddly toys and all sorts of 'stuff'

So far, thats it. But we've still got a couple of local classic car shows plus the Manchester Classic thing and the NEC to go to in the name of 'work'

Loving that R5 Gordini, in a scrabbling on a rally stance kind of way. And that rusty Capri is quite exciting too.

Right so after a brief period of rest lets carry on shall we.

After the adventures of Capesthorne Hall came the Lancashire Cla$$ic Car Show held at Hoghton Tower near Preston. Most of the time this show gets cancelled as the owners don't like their field getting rained on which is perhaps not so handy when your field is in northern England. Anyway, last week it was dry but very cold (don't forget that winter has officially started up here)

Saving the best 'til first, this Renault camper was delightfully knackered and looked like the ideal place to enjoy an unpleasant cup of poorly made tea while savouring the smell of damp.

Orange Fiat was a bit brightly hued for most visitors who couldn't remember cars being available in anything other than metallic grey or silver.

Immaculate Metro filled with photocopies of original V5. Bet first owner Phyllis Netherbrush would be chuffed with that... Car was nice though.
