The Bubblecar Museum

So, Family_tone (featuring jr_tone, muvva+favver_tone and better_half_tone) went (of their own free will*) to the Bubblecar Museum near Boston, Lincs this morning.

It will surprise no one to hear that it's a bit odd. It used to be on the A17 near Newark (ish) and relocated a couple of years ago to the other end of the A17, on a camp site. Whether it's better or bigger or smaller or anything else than the previous site I can't say, as despite driving past it quite often for nearly 10 years I never managed to be passing when it was a: open, and b: I had more than 10 minutes to spare. But finally, after at least 13 years of planning, I finally made it. And I left my camera at home.

So, please excuse the rubbishness of this write up and my terrible attempts to document everything using my phone. Some came out ok, some didn't. It doesn't help that it's mostly laid out so you need a fish eye lense to capture more than a headlight or hubcap in one shot, nor that (with a couple of exceptions) you're basically only allowed to look at things exactly head on.That said, it's £3 to get in, and there's a brilliant wagon outside, and also a mouldy looking late BX which I liked.

So here we go:

A knackered Hen's tooth Zündapp Janus. I got quite excited about this, as you can see from the picture quality, and total number of pictures taken. (1)

This Suzuki was ace but I've forgotten the model and I'm in a bit of a rush to throw post up this qual* content.

Ok, more later. Apologies again for overall crapness, but OOH TINY CARZ.

Phone worst for posting actual content. Aye Fronte. That's the one! Spotters badge in post. :)

Regardless of authoring maladies, the Fronte is superbly cool. I would love one to come & live in my garage.

Yes, it was ace. Like a really clever persons 126 or more interesting version of that very similar Honda thing.

As I mentioned, the layout of the place is such that everything's a bit crammed in, but I managed to get some decent pictures of the odd one. Before those though, here's some more general rammel:

Bonus Heinkels:

Now, this I liked - a 4 wheeled Bond Bug:

Apparently it was an idea they gave up on pretty quickly. Not sure if the odd headlight pods put them off.

Some interesting arses rear aspects of cars I managed to miss from the front:

Utter mystery this one. Might be a Reliant?:

This Inter Autoscooter(?) was beautiful, I took loads of pictures and only 2 came out, and even one of them was shaky. URGH.
Apparently you could fold the wheels in to make it even tinier, so you could stick it in a wardrobe or something (all furniture enquiries purchasing to IKB please).

Upstairs there's a kind of mezzanine full of invalid carriages and scooters. At least one of the party was getting slightly grumbly, so I paid even less attention to these, bet here's the glut of what I managed.

(Matching hearing aids available in the gift shop)

Apparently the Tomcar is an Israeli commercial off-road utility vehicle. BEEFY.

A fleet of Bambys:

The only photo that came out of the Solyto was the one of the period* tabs on the dashboard:

But here's some more Berkeley to please the masses:

So all in all, decent. Although all 3 non-dead generations of my branch of the Lloyd family were a bit grumpy that the museum sold off their Norddeutsche Automobil und Motoren 600 a few years ago.

Wow. Now, there's a whole heap of inadequate and miserable motoring experiences. Any idea what the finned red thing is next to the Fronte (88PEPT)?

Great to see they still have the Suzuki. I've never asked them if they know more about it, but I reckon it could well be one of the early evaluation cars brought in:

That looks like quite a high quality visit for £3. I remember visiting equally strange little car 'museums' out in the middle of the countryside when I was a kid. Used to love it.
